This webinar is one of five available during Velg Training's dedicated Focus Week: AI

About this webinar

AI isn’t going away — and assessment design is where RTOs can either end up in a policing arms race, or build smarter tasks that make AI use visible, ethical, and assessable. This practical session is designed for trainers/assessors, instructional designers, and compliance managers who develop, implement, or review assessment tools.

Rather than relying on AI detection or blanket bans, we’ll focus on assessment design strategies that allow appropriate AI use while maintaining strong evidence of competence. The session will also introduce and apply Leon Furze’s AI Assessment Scale as a practical way to determine when and how AI can be used across different task types, while keeping assessment decisions defensible and consistent.

Key topics covered

  • Reframing assessment in the age of AI: moving from bans/detection to assessment design that makes AI use transparent and assessable.
  • Applying Leon Furze’s AI Assessment Scale: setting consistent expectations for appropriate AI use across different VET task types.
  • Building AI guardrails into assessment tools: clear instructions, permitted/prohibited use, disclosure requirements, and practical student declarations.
  • Designing for strong evidence and authenticity: task patterns that assess judgement and context, supported by workable evidence trails (drafts/iterations/rationales).
  • Assessor verification and marking updates: practical verification strategies and marking criteria that maintain defensible decisions when AI is permitted.
